Biography

The last thing you’ll ever think of Pokwang is a dramatic queen, but the truth is she can be what she wants to be. Perhaps you can attribute it to her versatility and zest for life. It seems like she’s definitely born to entertain.

Born Marietta Subong, Pokwang has earned starred in numerous films and TV shows in just a span of 3 years. But then again, everything wasn’t bed of roses for her. For one, her life is a definite opposite of her moniker, which means laughter. For one, she needs to work doubly hard for her family, considering that there are 11 other siblings depending on their parents. It doesn’t make matters any more comfortable when his father was a well-known drunkard.

Because of extreme poverty, she forced herself to get out of the country and eventually worked in Japan to be an entertainer. It was during her years of stay there when she met her first boyfriend named Hideyo, who later became the father of his son. However, it appeared like the relationship had nowhere else to go but to its ultimate end, Hideyo and Pokwang decided to separate. She decided to come back in the Philippines but later traveled back to Japan to resume her work, leaving his son in the care of her mother.

What could have been a chance to improve their lives all together turned into one whole tragedy when she learned that her son had died. This prompted her to return to her country. Perhaps in the back of her mind, she already had enough of Japan, and it’s high time to try her luck in the Philippines.

Everything took a drastic turn when Pokwang later became one of the contestants for “Clown in a Million,” a segment on the now-defunct gag show Yes! Yes! Show. This gave her an opportunity to display her comedic prowess through the different challenges that they have to surpass. And, fortunately, Pokwang’s destiny is to make us happy. She won the grand prize.
